Today is my Birthday! I’m about 90% sure that I’m 28. It is also Halloween. For those who have that one friend, or family member, who’s birthday falls on Halloween. Maybe you are that person, in which case some of this will ring true. Here’s a couple truths about the pros and cons of being a Halloween baby.
- Don’t Plan Birthday Parties on October 31st.
Honestly, there just no point. With the exception of the guilt ridden family members, no one will show. Why would they? Its Halloween and if you’re under 13 there’s about 2- 3 good hours of Trick or Treating to get done in a decent neighborhood before you have to get back home. Even I wouldn’t have wasted that time at someone’s house where less people can see my costume and I’d get less candy. I learned this lesson the hard way at 10 years old, but now I look back and realize that the Holiday will always trump the Birthday. As much as I hate doing it I’ve learned to just suck it up and move any party I have to another day, Its just easier and less disappointing.
2. You can get away with eating more sweets then others on Halloween.
Even as an Adult this is true. While you may not have a party, people will give you extra candy when you tell them its your birthday. This will apply at school, trick or treating, and at work. Your teacher will give you can extra helping. Your Co-workers may provide cupcakes, as I’ve had before. As a kid whats better than getting a full size cake on top of the massive amount of candy you’ve already had. Your dentist will hate you, but hey you make out like a bandit.
3. You can Dress up on your birthday and no one will think its weird.
Unless you’re one of those annoying ironic kids, everyone loves dressing up for Halloween. I could live to be 90 and I can still dress up as Buzz Light-year and no one would bat an eye, and if they do well its your birthday so forget them! I can’t see kids who have birthdays on Christmas or Thanksgiving getting away with having a costume party unless you’re all elves, turkeys and reindeer. On my birthday there is no restriction on where your imagination takes you! You’re welcome.
4. People will either think your birthday the coolest thing ever or the worst.
Its funny how people perceive Birthday Holidays (or Holiday Birthdays, I haven’t figured that out) as either being awesome or lame. I guess I can see why, its just funny how vocal we are about it. You get to listen to a lot of, “OMG that is the best birthday ever!” comments or a lot of, “OMG that must suck”comments. The annoying part is not knowing how to respond because it can be a bit of both depending on your age and how you were raised. Most of my responses end up being a weak defense of Halloween birthday or a strange sounding condemnation depending on what they say.
Regardless of what you do today, I hope everyone has a Happy Halloween and even happier Randay (it’l catch on) this year. Eat candy, dress up, get scared and think of me. Now if you’ll excuse me I’ve got a chocolate cake with my name on it. Literally it has my name because its my birthday and not you’rs. Have fun with that candy corn.
